As a person born in 1990, my first memory of watching a standup comedy was when Star TV launched its show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. Show which gave us comedians like Raju Shrivastav, Navin Prabhakar, Sunil Pal & Eshan Qureshi. Later on I had privilege to experience greats like Russel Peters & Louis C.K. As time progressed, standup comedy became a common mode of entertainment. At present if we check on Youtube, we can find huge number of standup comedians from our country itself associated with certain channel like SnG comedy, EIC or operating individually. The concept of show like Laughter Challenge has been emulated or resurrected various time on different channels with different hosts. Experiencing various acts ranging from funny to controversial, I have seen the scenario of Indian standup comedy change extensively. And when I say extensively, I find it has changed not in the best direction.
Lets go back to time when comedian Raju Shrivastav, Johnny Lever, Sunil Pal and other mentioned above were a hot thing in standup comedy circle. If you have been going through their jokes/acts, their jokes/acts were mix of satires, general situation, mimicry of famous personalities, self mockery or representation of personal experiences in funny manner. Most of their jokes were based on various scenarios and involved fictional characters. Characters like Gajodhar or some gaav ka chahcha. I remember Raju Shrivastav to have made jokes on inanimate objects if they could speak. Who can forget Navin Prabhakar's Pehchan Kaun or Eshan Qureshi's jokes in shayari style.
Fast forward to 2015, standup comedy is India became an integral part of Youtube. Places like Canvas Laugh Club & Hard Rock Cafes dedicated space for new standup acts. Abundance of talk shows mean demand for standup comedians. All sounds good and it was going good till 2015 or maybe 2016. But nowadays standup comedy acts are nothing but criticism or rants on anything and everything. More than humor or jokes, acts are filled with personal experiences & criticism towards anything new.
What are my observations towards standup comedians and their acts,
- Almost all of them are ranting or complaining about issues around them. Very few times it is funny, most of time it is just run of the mill generic criticism. The biggest offender is Sorabh Pant. This guy was awesome if seen in his old videos and acts. He was actually humorous. But now all he is does is keeps ranting about everything that makes news. Even other big names like Atul Khatri or Kalyan Biswa Rath have resorted to this technique. Oh look new govt. policy, lets rant. Bad service by Uber, lets rant. My personal opinion, ranting is not comedy, its basically complaining. Comedians have joked about things they don't like in their punchlines without having to go on full rants.
- Too much personal experiences. Every comedian comes on stage and starts with, 'Main kuch din pehle yaha gaya, phir mujhe ye mila. Usne aisa kiya to maine aisa bola'. They sound funny. Haven't we seen Russell Peters do personal experience stuff, yes. But he also mixes it with jokes that don't become personal experiences but rather are 3rd person view of a funny incident. But here in India, none of the comedy act starts or ends where it is not personal act. I think 99% of standup comedians operating at present would be offenders in this.
- Once the format of standup comedy show went hit on TV, it became a staple for every channel. Everybody wants the piece of the pie. But again, they want the show to run on prime-time and thus compromising a huge chunk of content due to fear of censorship. Thus, people are always introduced to Santa-Banta level of jokes.
- Kapil Sharma. Yes, I think this is one of the worst thing to happen to Indian comedy scenario. Just worst. I can only say, it started good, but was stretched beyond many cringe levels.
- Over abusive and sexualized performances. I have seen many acts where the content is low and of mediocre quality. But all the comedian does is keeps repeating abuses in between words and pads his acts to manage the time. This topic is like a two ended sword. Many comedians have pulled it off brilliantly, comedians like Atul Khatri or Abhishek Upamanyu, they swear and abuse, but it comes with a good content. But then again there is Sorabh Pant who goes on rant and while dropping unnecessary F-bombs after every sentence. Recently I was watching this show called Queens of Comedy, a standup comedy show only for female contestants. So it was a round where 2 contestants had to do a face-off. Audience will provide a profession, they have to make as many statements possible within 45 seconds that would get them fired from that job. Basic summary, 1 contestant made statements suggesting sexual acts, another made funny statements. Guess who won?
- Too many standup comedians. One thing that never changes is engineering students realizing engineering is not their passion but something else is. And this definition of passion keeps changing from photographer, musician, travel blogger to standup comedian. Anybody who think they can crack a joke tries his hand at standup comedy. People who are genuinely funny, people like Varun Thakur, Abish Matthew or Karunesh Talwar actually garner interest. But there are standup comedians who just think that the provided platform is same as cracking jokes between group of few college friends.
I am not against these standup comedians, there are many good ones. Good ones like Atul Khatri, Zakir Khan, Sapan Verma, Varun Thaker, Abish MAtthew, Karunesh Talwar, Abhishek Upamanyu, Aadar Malik and many more. But again there are not so good ones, like Sorab Pant, Kalyan Biswa Rath, Kunal Rao, Aditi Mittal, Karan Talwar (Bollywood Gandu) and many more. When I say not so good, its because, it feels they don't have any positive outlook towards daily life. They find everything negative and create a joke.
Remember when Sachin Tendulkar & Lata Mangeshkar controversy happened. There was news channel which set a panel where Sunil Pal was member. Search for it on Youtube, you'll find it. He went completely mental while ranting against Youtube Standup comedians. He said many things that were utter bullshit. But one line that I think was right was, 'Yeh comedians stage pe rehke English me bolte hai aur log haste hain'. I think somewhere it is true, nowadays it feels like anyone who cracks a joke and can speak English and believes Engineering is no good for him decides to become a standup comedian.
